It's a good thing to learn about the muscle model.

Seriously, for the first time in the anatomy lab, when I touched that semi-muscular model, I was a mess. Not because it's scary, but because it turns the two-dimensional lines that were originally printed in the book into a stereo that turns around. That kind of shock, it's like people who look at maps suddenly turn on reality navigation.

Half the empty ones filled their brains.

The muscles on the endorsement used to start and end up like a bunch of irregular postage. The bicep has a long head on the shoulder and a short head on the stork.——I'll give it back to the teacher when I'm done. But unlike the model, it's only half a muscle, and the other half is naked. I was beginning to get tired of it, and then I found out that it was too much.

You stare at it, and the sight jumps between "meat" and "no meat." When you see red pec muscles attached to the gill, and then turn to the back, you can see the angle at which it crosses the shoulder joint. The "why" in that kind of space just suddenly came through.——Turns out this muscle had to be here because it was going to do the inside and the inside of the arm. It's not a back-up, it's a vision.

The final test that was saved by the model.

Remember that gymnasium exam, when the teacher took a random muscle to get us to say where we started and how we functioned. It wasn't the text of the textbook that appeared in my head when I took my hip.——Slash down from the outside of the ostrich wing and plug it into the big rotor. And even because there's no meat on the other side of the model, I can "brain" it under my hips. That was a very smooth answer, not because I had a good memory, but because it was in my head.

And then I realized that this kind of half-muscular design is actually forcing your brain to "complete" information. It doesn't give you anything like a complete model, but it leaves you white, and you build your own space logic between bones and muscles. It's so much better than a duck-filled memory.

Now I think about that model, especially when I do my own autopsy. And it taught me one thing: sometimes, less or less, the empty half is precisely the entrance to understanding.
